How to Return Amazon Gift Without Sender Knowing

Receiving gifts can be a delight, but what happens when your great aunt sends you yet another horrendous sweater? We’ve all been there. You want to return the gift to Amazon so you can put the credit toward something you’ll actually use, but you don’t want to hurt Auntie’s feelings.

If you return a gift on Amazon, does the sender know? No, you can absolutely return Amazon gift without sender knowing. We’ll walk through the steps to quietly return that well-intentioned but useless gift. We’ll cover how to find the order details, request a return, and make sure the refund goes back to your account, not the gift giver’s.

Let’s find out how.

How to Return Amazon Gift Without Sender Knowing?

Amazon credits are as good as cash, which you can use for shopping anything available on that platform. So, if you know how to return gift on Amazon, you can easily use that credit to buy something you’ll truly cherish.

Follow these steps to return amazon gift without sender knowing.

Step 1

You have to locate the Order ID to return the gift. You’ll find this unique 17-digit number printed on the packing slip included with the gift. Unwrap carefully so you don’t accidentally throw it away.

If you received a digital gift receipt, check your email inbox. Amazon will have sent the Order ID and other return details there. If you can’t find the ID number, try contacting the gift giver as a last resort and explain you need it for the warranty.

Step 2

You’ll need access to an Amazon account. If you’re not already a user, take a minute to set up a user account. The process is quick and free.

After signing up, move into the next step.

Step 3

Navigate to Amazon’s Gift Returns page. This is where you can process returns on gifted items.

Locate the search bar and type in the 17-digit Order ID number for the gift. Double check it is entered correctly. Hit the “Search” button and Amazon will pull up the gift order details.

Step 4

On the order details page, check the boxes next to each item you wish to return. Even if it was a single item order, you need to select it here.

Next, click the drop-down menu to choose your reason for returning. Pick an option like “No longer needed,” “too large/long,” or “Style not as expected.”

If the gift came from a third-party seller, you may need to submit a return request first. Some sellers want to review the reason before approving. This is just an extra step to ensure your return goes through hassle-free.

Step 5

To return Amazon gift without sender knowing, you need to choose a return shipping from the several available options.

Look for the convenient Amazon Hub Locker or store drop-off returns. Just select a nearby, secure locker location or retail partner store like Kohl’s, Whole Foods, or Petco.

You’ll instantly get a return label to print. Carefully pack up the gift and drop it off using the label. An added perk is some stores give discounts for returns made in-store.

Just remember each gift order gets its own separate return label, so don’t mix multiple items in one box.

Step 6

If you choose a return method that needs packaging up, grab an empty box and fill it with the unwanted gift item. Be sure to include all original parts, accessories, tags, and packaging exactly as received. The gift must be in new, unused condition to be accepted back.

Slip the return authorization paper inside before sealing up the box. Then take the return shipping label you printed out earlier and attach it to the outside of the package. Now just drop off or mail out the box, and Amazon will handle the rest.

Once received, Amazon will process the return and issue a gift card credit back to your account. This typically takes 1-2 weeks but can be up to 30 days during peak times.

So, this is how to return Amazon gift without sender knowing. It’s a discreet and convenient way to exchange an unwanted present for something you actually want.

Can You Exchange an Amazon Product?

What if that sweater from your aunt is the right style but the wrong size? No need to return the gift entirely. You may be able to exchange it instead!

When initiating the Amazon return, check the drop-down menu for an “exchange” option. For some items, you can swap out the original gift for a different size, color, or variation.

But if that exchange option isn’t available, you can still go through the standard return process outlined above. Once you get that Amazon gift card refund back in your account, simply shop for the version you want.

Pro Tip: Remember that Amazon has a 30-day return policy. For third-party seller items, return windows can vary. So, you should check each seller’s policies on the Returns to Third-Party Sellers page before sending the item back.

How to Return Amazon Gift Without Receipt

So, you can do an Amazon return with gift receipt. Without the 17-digit order number, can you still do it?

Unfortunately, no receipt means no return. Amazon’s system requires that unique Order ID to look up and process a return.

So, if you don’t have the packing slip or gift email handy, you’ll need to ask the sender for it. Say you need it for the warranty or your records. With any luck, your aunt will buy that excuse and provide the number.

Also, there are some select items that Amazon deems “non-returnable” too. Once you enter the Order ID on the Gift Returns page, any non-eligible items will be labeled as such. This could include some jewelry items, custom-made goods, and grocery items among other types.
